FAQ’s Regarding Teen Employment
- Who needs a work permit?
Anyone working under the age of 18 who has not graduated. (If you are under 18 and have a high school diploma or the equivalency, you do not need a work permit.)
- Do I need a work permit before I apply for a job?
No, but you do need one before you actually start work.
Steps to obtain a work permit:
- pick up the work permit application in the Career Center.
- fill out the student information section
- have the employer sign and fill out his/her section
- obtain a parent or guardian’s signature
- return the completed application to the Career Center before school and we will make every attempt to have the actual work permit ready for you after school that same day
- the work permit is then signed by the student and taken to the employer, who will keep it on file
- Where can I get a work permit?
Vacaville High School students get work permits from the VHS Career Center in
Room 4.
- Can I get a work permit if I’ve dropped out of school or quit attending?
No, you must be regularly attending school to qualify for a work permit.
- Who can revoke a work permit?
Parents can revoke a work permit or a school administrator can revoke a work permit for poor attendance.
- How old do I have to be to get a work permit?
Fourteen years old. (There are some exceptions for the entertainment industry.)
- I’m 16 (or 17); how late can I work during the school year?
10 PM when you have school the next day and 12:30 AM on any day preceding a non-school day.
- I’m 14 (or 15); how late can I work?
7 PM during the school year and 9 PM during summer vacation.
- How many hours a day can I work during the school year?
14 and 15 years old—3 hours per day Monday-Friday, 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday and a maximum of 18 hours per week
16 and 17 years old—4 hours per day Monday-Thursday, 8 hours per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and a maximum of 28 hours per week
- How many hours a day can I work during summer vacation?
8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
- If I change jobs, do I need a new work permit?
Yes.
- Where do I go to get a work permit during the summer or during vacations when my school is closed?
The Vacaville Unified School District office located at 751 School Street.
- How long will my work permit be valid?
All work permits expire in September during the first week of school or when you change jobs.
- My friend was denied a work permit, why?
Most likely it was denied due to truancies, unexcused absences or excessive absences.
- Can my work permit be revoked for poor attendance?
YES
- Are there any jobs I’m not allowed to do?
Yes, if you are under 18 years of age there are several jobs and equipment you are not allowed to operate. Partial list of examples:
Motor vehicle driving (i.e. pizza delivery person), operating power-driven woodworking machines/forklifts/hoists/saws/paper bailing machines, wrecking, demolition, roofing, excavation, mining, logging, operating a power driven meat slicing machine (such as those found in sandwich shops), or operating a power driving dough mixer (such as those found in a bakery or restaurant).
